The NSW Food Authority may approve laboratories to:
- analyse samples obtained by Authority Officers
- prepare certificates of analysis for these samples.
The responsibilities of ‘approved laboratories’ are outlined in the Food Act 2003 (NSW).
If approvals are granted, a list must be maintained and available in accordance with s 80.

Laboratories for other tests
Analysis of samples may sometimes be provided by laboratories or analysts that are not ‘approved’ under the Act, for example by food businesses to meet sampling and analysis requirements of Food Safety Schemes. These can be found in the relevant industry manual.
The Food Authority encourages businesses to choose laboratories accredited by NATA, the National Association of Testing Authorities.
